Volunteer Opportunities

Meet & Greets

M & G.s are when we bring our greyhound pets to a location in the community for a few hours, usually a storefront or inside a designated business. This is an opportunity for people to meet our friendly greyhounds, to ask questions about the breed, and for us to give them information on adoption. We always have an experienced volunteer at these events to deal with the in-depth questions. New volunteers are welcome to show their greyhound off and give applications to interested individuals!

Hauls

Hauls are when we pick up new ex-racers that we will be finding homes for. We often need volunteers who are willing to use their vehicle, or one of ours, to drive to various points west and south in NY state as well as various points in PA, MA and NH to pick up 1-3 dogs and bring them back to Syracuse. We usually have new volunteers make a haul with a more experienced volunteer on their first few times before going it alone.

Bathing

Bathing is necessary once we get the ex-racers here. Depending on whether the dogs came straight from the track or from a kennel atmosphere, they may need to be cleaned up. We need help holding the dogs, picking off the ticks and fleas, cleaning their ears, and trimming nails. We bathe them, dry them, and check them over for any cuts or obvious medical problems. After all this is done, they need to be transported to their foster homes.

Fostering

Fostering is a crucial need of ours! After getting the dogs and cleaning them up, they immediately go to foster homes to be cared for. These volunteers not only care for their foster dog but also teach it some basic skills of home living (such as climbing stairs) and socialization. Our foster program is usually 2-4 weeks in duration but occasionally is longer if need be. Fostering can be very rewarding, and most of our fosters love the experience! Even if you decide to foster only occasionally, it would be very helpful to us in helping more dogs. The more foster homes we have, the more greyhounds we can help! We will provide training and support before and during the fostering. Click here for a Foster care application (Adobe pdf)

Fund Raising

Fundraisers are held on occasion and we need help with ideas, organization, and volunteering for these events. We are a non-profit group run by volunteers. The adoption donations for our dogs cover normal vetting fees but not additional/operational expenses (such as insurance).
